Guatemala (ContentDesk) October 12, 2005 -- Hurricane Stan has brought almost 11 days of relentless rain, but like Hurricane Mitch (Oct 30 to Nov 1 1998), the rain has taken a heavy toll causing huge mudslides. Government officials say this is worse than Hurricane Mitch by far. In one area near Panajachel more than 1,400 are dead and buried under up to 40 feet of mud more than one-half mile long. Tens of thousands of the poorest of the poor are now homeless and living outside.
More than 37 bridges are washed out, and countless portions of roads have been destroyed making access to many areas impossible.Entire villages have been wiped out, literally buried in mud.

Bridges are destroyed; roads are barricaded by tons of mud, and communications knocked out. Estimates are that it will be a few months until roads will be fully cleared. Guatemala, having just recovered from a similar incident, Hurricane Mitch in 1998, is now left with yet another devastating disaster. Yet unlike Mitch, recovery may not be as quick, as international aid is already outstretched to New Orleans and now the Pakistan earthquake victims.Poor, indigenous towns and villages, such as those in the Lake Atitlan region, have been completely wiped out. Lake Atitlan, a major tourist attraction (Panajachel) located within a valley, is now a deathtrap strewn with mudslides and flooding.

All roads were completely cut off and aid was being sent via helicopter. In one village alone there are more than 1,400 dead. Survivors are now desperate for food and supplies. As of now, there are no know tourist casualties.Project Happiness, working with Hands of Hope has launched into emergency mode to address the serious and overwhelming need for emergency assistance. We are putting together Family Disaster Relief Boxes to these needy and homeless victims.

Packages will include food, vitamins, soap, water, blankets and other necessary aid supplies.Donation per Disaster Relief Box is $20, including deliver to the disaster areas. (Retail value of the products is well over $30, but we buy at wholesale and some of the products are partially donated.)Please help, by visiting http://www.ProjectHappiness.org..

Dallas-Based Medisend International Sends Aid to Indonesia

(ContentDesk) January 11, 2006 -- Until recently, with the marking of the one year anniversary of the tragic flood that killed over 200,000 people and devastated Southeast Asia, the media has long ceased sending cameras to the areas struck by the tsunami. The needs, however, are greater than ever. Dallas-based MediSend International established a long-range program for the distribution of medical and surgical equipment and supplies to the region immediately after last years horrific flooding. This week, with the generous support and partnership of ExxonMobil, MediSend has shipped two forty foot containers loaded with medical and surgical equipment and supplies to Indonesia. The first container will go to four hospitals in Banda Aceh, one of the worst hit areas by the tsunami in Indonesia.

ExxonMobil and MediSend have partnered with Save the Children to distribute the second container to clinics in the rural areas of Indonesia. MediSend partnered with Dallas-based Estech Systems,...

Beginning the Special Education Process

Like anything else in life, there's a method to the special education process. It was put in place to help people who deal with learning disabilities get the best services possible. In order to help you understand this method, here's a simplified version of the Special Education process. 1)Request for evaluationSomeone sees that the child is having difficulty in school and asks that testing be done to find out what's causing the problem. This request can come from parents or educators.

If the parents make the request, the district must agree to give a full and individual evaluation. If the request is made from someone else, such as a teacher, a team of educators and an administrator will meet to review the reasons and decide whether to pursue testing. No matter who makes the request, you as the parent, must give written permission for this testing to be done. At this point, you will be informed of your rights and those of your child. If the district decides not to test, then it...
